Tarun Bhattacharya is one of India’s most exciting performers. His mastery of complex rhythms and playful “dialogues” make his concerts a true delight. Tarun was chosen by Ravi Shankar to perform on his “Chants of India” album produced by George Harrison.

The concert will feature a Sitar prelude by Diana Waldron, a student of Roop Verma. It will end with a Sitar postlude featuring Shraman Sen with Ucchal Banerjee, tabla.  Shraman is a student of Ustad Irshad Khan and studied with Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan as well.

South Indian Mridangam performance and accompaniment by Ramesh Srinivasan and Sathya Ramesh.

The concert is a benefit for Santoor Ashram, Kolkata, a project to bring music to disadvantaged youth.

Maestro Tarun Bhattacharya has created a Santoor Ashram where financially underprivileged students could have music lessons and room and board. Situated amidst the peaceful tranquility and greenery of rural Bengal, the Ashram has helped shape the careers of some of the recognized musicians of today. Despite financial constraints, Pt Tarun Bhattacharya strives to develop and shape young promising classical music careers and continuing India’s rich musical heritage.

Recently the Santoor Ashram has opened its arms for American students by starting a branch in Los Angeles with an eye on spreading Indian Classical Music to the US. Tarun strongly believes that through the power of music, individuals can become compassionate, peace loving and, of course, musical.

Matagiri is a nonprofit organization 8 miles west of Woodstock on Wittenberg Road. The concert hall has a whole house air handler bringing in fresh air and removing stale air. Matagiri offers regular yoga classes and pilates style mat classes and cultural events throughout the year.
