Radhika Samson trained under the guidance of the late world-renowned Hansaveena (slide guitar) maestro Pandit Barun Kumar Pal, a senior disciple of Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar. Barun played often at Matagiri and was a revered teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Delhi Branch.
Radhika attended classes on Indian classical music at the Ravi Shankar Institute of Music and Performing Arts established in New Delhi. She has performed at several prestigious platforms/festivals in India and abroad, and her concerts have been appreciated by audiences and critics alike.
Radhika is currently faculty of Sitar at Sadhana School of Music, Dance and Arts, New Delhi. She is also training several young talents in traditional Indian classical music at The Mother’s International School, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi. As a dedicated and devoted artist she wishes to carry forth this rich tradition with sincere commitment.
After being initiated formally into the oldest form of Hindustani Classical Music through the Surbahar, the bass sitar, she is currently teaching Odissi dance and Indian Classical music in New York at Chhandayan. She will be joined by Ramanan Venkatraman, another senior student of our dear departed Barun Kumar Pal.
Ramanan will play a meditative series of unaccompanied ragas on the Hansa Veena, the instrument based on the slack key lap slide guitar. Ravi Shankar himself gave the name “Hansa (Swan) Veena”.
