Barun Kumar Pal returns to Matagiri in a duet setting with flute master Steve Gorn. Barun plays Indian Classical slide guitar. His custom designed instrument was named “Hansa (Swan) Veena” by Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Barun Kumar Pal, a world-renowned artist, hails from a family of eminent names amongst the senior and current generation of Indian classical musicians of India.
Pt. Barun Pal’s many years of research have given his playing style an unique quality which aesthetically incorporates the mellifluous blend of the Veena, Sitar and Sarod.

Barun Pal is one of the foremost disciples of Sitar Maestro Bharat Ratna Pt.
Ravi Shankar.

Since 1983, Barun Pal has been travelling extensively all over the world giving
solo performances, music workshops, lecture demonstrations and Radio-TV
interviews. He has released numerous cassettes, LP’s and CD’s worldwide. His
concerts are preserved by the British National Archives.

Pandit Barun Kumar Pal is admired all over the world for his spiritual rendering of ragas
and as a rare combination of performer, music composer, music director and
guru.

Steve Gorn

Steve is an accomplished Indian Classical flutist who studied with the late bansuri master Sri Gour Goswami, of Kolkata, and Pt. Raghunath Seth of Mumbai, who he often accompanied in concert. He also studied with the late Ustad Z. M. Dagar. He has often performed in India, appearing at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, Habitat Center and Triveni Hall in New Delhi, The Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, NCPA, and The Nehru Center in Mumbai, and numerous other venues. His performance with Pandit Ravi Shankar’s disciple, Barun Kumar Pal, at Kolkata’s Rama Krishna Mission, was televised throughout India. In 2013, he was awarded the Pandit Jasraj Rotary Club of Hyderabad Award for Cross Cultural Achievement.

His numerous recordings include Luminous Ragas, Rasika, (with tabla by Samir Chatterjee,) Illuminations, (with Nepali bansuri wallah, Manose,) the landmark Indian-Jazz fusion recording, Asian Journal, and Pranam, a jugalbandi with Barun Kumar Pal playing hansaveena, and Samir Chatterjee, tabla.

Steve has also recorded with Paul Simon and Paul Winter.

Aditya Phatak

Aditya Phatak is a young student of Indian music, with special aptitude in Tabla. He started playing at the age of two, even before he was tall enough to reach the drums. He was initially inspired by his grandfather Deepak Phatak and guided by his uncle Shivraj Phatak. Since February of 2008, when he was four years old, he came under the loving mentorship of Pt. Samir Chatterjee in the formal Guru- Shishya (master-disciple) relationship. He is also studying Hindustani Classical vocal music with Smt. Rucha Jambhekar.
