Matagiri is holding a special benefit concert at the Living Seed in New Paltz on Sunday April 21st at 4 pm with an exciting sitar duo. This concert is made possible with support from the Diane and Garry Kvistad Foundation.

$25 advanced general admission. $35 Reserved Seats. $50 Patron. $30 cash at the door.

Deepshankar Bhattachariya is a young sitarist born in the year 1986, is the fourth generation sitarist of an enlightened musical family. He plays a unique style of sitar playing invented and perfected by Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan saheb. Deepsankar is an ” A-GRADE ” sitarist from ALL INDIA RADIO. He has performed at various places in India and abroad. Deepsankar has been awarded by several Gold medals and titles from various organizations all over in the world.

Rohan Dasgupta Deep’s cousin, was born into a musical family, later, at the age of 9, he was taken to learning Sitar in a traditional way ‘Guru Shishya parampara’, living with his guru and learning the art form and the way of life. Rohan has also learnt the Jaffer Khan style and also from the legendary Sarod artist Pandit Budhhadev Dasgupta for a short time. Tabla artist and composer Shri Udhai Mazumdar of Beneras gharana has been guiding Rohan in the art of Indian rhythm and its interpretation on Indian music improvisations.

 

Subrata Bhattacharya

is one of the leading tabla players. He has received his taalim under Shri Tamal Krishna Chatterjee, Shri Nripen Karmakar and Shri Tapan Kr. Banerjee before he was finally accepted as a student of tabla maestro Pt. Shankar Ghosh. He has since proved himself a worthy exponent of the Farukhabad Gharana. Recognition of his talent has come in the form of such awards as the Sangeet Prabhankar and the Gold Medal and the Saangeet Praveen from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahadad, and Sangeet Bhushan from the Bhatkhande College, Lucknow. He has accompanied Dr. L. Subramaniam,  Pt. Buddhaditya Mukherjee, Udstad Shahid Parvez Khan and sarod maestro Abhisek Lahiri among other outstanding artists.
