Theories of Everything

Ken Wilbur in the Light of Sri Aurobindo

Talk by Charles Flores

Time Monday, November 21 · 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Location One Spirit Learning Alliance247 West 36th Street, 6th FloorNew York, NY 10018

This talk will begin by examining the challenges of grand theory building—“Theories of Everything.” We will critically examine Wilber’s understanding of Sri Aurobindo, and how this compares to Sri Aurobindo’s understanding and view of the world in his own right, which I will briefly summarize. Sri Aurobindo has been assessed through the lens of AQAL, but what would Wilber’s integral theory look like viewed from Sri Aurobindo’s perspective? Sri Aurobindo’s coinage of the term integral was quite different from that of Wilber in many respects. Since Sri Aurobindo never lived to see Wilber’s integral theory, I will extrapolate how Sri Aurobindo would likely view integral theory if he were still alive today. This will hopefully help us gain greater awareness of the inevitable challenges inherent in theory building, in the application of such theories in the world, and in the dangers of misappropriation.

Through a greater understanding of Sri Aurobindo’s vision in relation to Wilber’s integral theory, there may be the promise of greater collaboration among the various contributors to integral theory, thus perhaps providing great opportunities to contribute to its evolution.

Charles I. Flores, PhD is an Adjunct Professor at California State University, East Bay, and has taught for John.F. Kennedy University, the Sri Aurobindo Center for Advanced Research, and other universities. He was also the West Coast Director of Auroville International USA.
